The students have started a landforms unit in science. They will learn about erosion, deposition, and different landforms. In the photos the students are creating erosion with sand and water. The water slowly drips from the cup and the students observe and record what they see happening. Next week we will be creating a flood and observing how the sand changes! It is fun to do these science investigations with the students. They work hard and are very curious and eager to learn!

Thanks to all the good cooks on our staff we were treated to some yummy food before school on Friday! We were getting the Christmas celebrating started. Lots of smiling faces! Science Investigations

Today the students started learning how to set up a science investigation (experiment). They all made pendulums out of string and a paper clip. Tomorrow we will add a penny for weight. We will do some testing to see what is the most accurate way to compare and measure the swings in a certain amount of time. More to come!

Are You Ready for Some Football?

Last Saturday morning I took a drive to Medical Lake to watch a student play football. It was a beautiful fall day. I love living here (Spokane area). I stopped at the local coffee shop before the game and had a nice view of the neighborhood white tail deer! Loved it.

There they go! The whole family! :-)

I decide it is very difficult to get good shots while everyone is moving. My camera doesn't do motion. The next thing is getting a picture of faces while the kids are playing. I went to watch Josh number 9. What a player!!!

In between plays I managed to snap a decent picture! Can't tell you how many blurry ones I took!

A little advice from the coach!

What a nice relaxing morning! Fall and football! Josh intercepted a pass and scored a touchdown! Way to go Josh!

My Summer Vacation

I had a great summer vacation. Lots of family time and fun. Here is a sample of summertime activities! Mrs. Overman and I did the Lilac Century Ride! Mrs. Overman teaches at Hallett!

Ms. Spilker and I visited Leavenworth and tried on silly hats and glasses in the hat shop! Ms. Spilker teaches at Hallett!

They had my favorite candy! Yum!

It was a beautiful day!

Here are my cheerleaders for the Valley Girls triathlon. My step-son Stephen and his wife Michel along with their friend Shawn!

We took a plane ride around Mt. McKinley and landed on a glacier!

We took several motorcycle rides over the summer. On this ride we were headed up to Ione!

I headed over to Seattle to watch Katie, our youngest daughter, run the Rock and Roll 1/2 Marathon! She did great! I was so proud! She is getting ready to go putting her timing chip on!

Spokane Triathlon with Mrs. Overman!
This was a motorcycle ride that we took to 49 degrees north via the Flowery Trail Road. Beautiful drive. Love to ski at 49 in the winter.

Wunder Woman triathlon in Medical Lake! Mrs. Mason, Mrs. Gleason, and Mrs. Overman! Last tri of the season!
Here are several of the ladies that do triathlons together. We are missing some of the ladies. We call ourselves EAOD. Elite Athletes Only Different!
My oldest daughter and family live in Parker. I took a trip to Parker this summer. These are our grandsons greeting me at the airport.

Keri and I went to a movie and we had reserved seats and a waiter came to our seats to see if we wanted anything! VIP seats. WOW!
There was a visit to a museum in Denver too!

The boys were getting their cards stamped at all the locations in the museum.

Arbor Day

Last Friday, the 15th, we were invited to participate in the Arbor Day celebration on base. We started with a ceremony honoring the participation of Fairchild Air Force Base in the Arbor Day celebrations over the years.Then we got to work! We helped plants trees!

After the planting was complete there was hot chocolate and cookies for the students. Hit the spot on this cold, rainy day!

We had a great time at Arbor Day. It will be fun to watch the trees we planted grow tall and strong!

Middle School Practice

The lock for the lockers. Those locks seem to be the thing that students fear the most about middle school. Will, I be able to get that lock open??? Fast enough to get to class on time???? Our school counselor came in to give the students some practice with some skills they will need in middle school. The lock was first. Some students got it and some didn't. We will be unlocking locks again soon!

After we got done with the lock practice there was some organization practice. Each group had something they had to organize. A binder, a locker, and a backpack. They labeled folders and put all the papers in the correct folder. The students found places for scissors, glue, pens and pencils. They did a great job!

Middle school is just around the corner. The students had great practice with a few basics!

If you follow NFL football you know that the Saints and Seahawks played a couple of weeks ago. I am a huge Saints fan. Why? Because my stepson played for the Saints for 8 years. The Friday before the game the class decide it would be fun to wear your favorite jersey to school or your favorite team colors. I gave extra credit for anyone wearing Saints colors! Just kidding. Madyson and her family are Seahawks fans and we always banter back and forth about football! Jersey Day!

I got to school on Thursday before the game and saw this sign outside my room. I knew exactly who did it. The biggest Seahawks fan ever, Teresa!
I had to think of a way to show my team spirit so I sent her some balloons! Lovely colors!
She was a good sport and paraded them through the cafeteria! As it turned out she had the last word didn't she!
Friday morning more decorations outside my room thanks to Madyson and friends!
Leaving school I was blessed with this signage on my car! Thumbs down.
Well, the Saints were upset that Sat. afternoon and I was sad. We had fun at school cheering on our favorite team though!

Ice Skating

It was a perfect day with the perfect activity to start the Christmas break. Blue skies with a chill in the air but not too much of a chill. The fifth and sixth graders spent the day ice skating. A lot of the kids had never ice skated. You would never know it though. They did great. Here are some of the pictures. There will be a lot more in the 5th/6th grade hallway at school when we get back! Thanks for being such a responsible, fun, group of kids!

The Bowling Tournament

The fifth/sixth grade bowling tournament was today. The bowlers worked hard in PE class to qualify for the tournament. Great fun! We all came to watch! I am apologizing right now for the quality of some of the pictures. I just have a small point and shoot camera. Couldn't get close enough to the kids to get pictures that weren't grainy. I salvaged as many as I could! Here are some pictures of the bowlers and their fans!

The cheerleaders even came over from the high school! What a treat!!!
Some had the job of setting the pins back up after the bowlers rolled. They were fast and did a great job.

Miss Caldwell taught the students a lesson on buoyancy!!! They got to experiment with different items to test the buoyancy of the object. They dropped the item in a cup of water and recorded their results. What makes some objects more buoyant than others? Does dropping those items in the water have any connection to force? They investigated those questions and more!

Pay Day

The Gleasonville classroom has a mini government set up in it! We have a tax collector, fine collector, banker, landlord, etc. Each student applied for a classroom job and everyone has a job now. Each Friday students get paid with Kaminski Bucks and have to pay their taxes etc. If they don't have many fines the students can buy things at the store with their Kaminski Bucks! The fine collector is collecting money for fines!

We have a new Pay Day Specialist this week!

Tuesday in science we worked on how to set up an experiment. Students learned the concept of a variable using swingers (pendulums). We counted the number of cycles that occurred in 15 seconds. Then we brainstormed how to get a different result. Add weight, take weight away, push it harder, change the release point, etc. We finally decided we would change the length of the string. Stay tuned for our results!

Next time we will change one variable, the length of the string and see what happens!

Day One

10 years ago Blair Elementary was my teaching home. Today was the first day that I ventured out to Michael Anderson Elementary School on Fairchild Air Force Base. Things have changed. I will be teaching 5th grade at MAE. It was hard to pack up my things at Hallett. I have many great memories there. I have great friends that I will miss not seeing on a daily basis. I will miss the students too!

The first chore is always to unpack. I got most of that done today. I know I will change things around a lot during the year but I found places for my things for now. I feel like there is a lot of space in my classroom. Perhaps that is because I purged a ton of things that I hadn't been using!
"The Pumpkin"came with me and it will soon be filled with the names of my 5th grade students!
It doesn't look like it but I made a lot of progress unpacking.
The walls are bare. I have to figure out where to put my Saints, Rams, Cougar, and Dodger posters. :-)
I got my badge today to get on the base so I will be able to get out there and get my classroom done. I am going on a short vacation to see my daughter the week before schools starts. I need to get that classroom in order next week. There will be lots to learn! A new school has new routines, etc. I am excited to be an Eagle again!

Gleasonville is Moving

Gleasonville will be moving to Michael Anderson Elementary School this fall. I have accepted a 5th grade teaching position at MAE. I am sad to be leaving my friends and students at Hallett. I look forward to a new adventure at Michael Anderson. You know how to get a hold of me! So keep in touch.

When We Are Off Duty!

So what do the teachers in the district do on these holiday weekends? Well, we had a little adventure in Coeur d alene...a 1/2 marathon. Here we are wearing our prized possessions! The shirts! Yippee! We had a blast!

Farm Fair/IMAX Field Trip

Thursday morning we headed out the the Spokane County Fairgrounds to learn about farming in our area!

We had lunch at the fairgrounds and then headed to the IMAX for a film on the Hubble Telescope!

Circuits and Switches

Today we learned about open and closed circuits using wires, batteries, motors, light bulbs and switches. The students first created a circuit and got the motors working. Then they experimented on how to add the switch and make the motors go off and on using the switch. Light bulbs and extra batteries were experimented with also.

Static Electricty

Today was experiment day! We have just started learning about electricity. Yesterday we learned about atoms and their parts, protons, neutrons, and electrons. We talked about atoms, negative charges, and positive charges and learned that opposites attract. Today we put that knowledge into action and created some static electricity using, combs, salt, pepper, and wool.

The students were able to get the salt and pepper to attract to the comb by changing the charge of the comb!We even had some charged fingers!
